Lucky Dube Musical Career, Biography and How he Died.


Lucky Philip Dube, Born 3rd August 1964, was South African Reggea Musician and Rastafarian.

Dube records 22 albums in Zulu, English and Afrikaans in a 25yrs period and was South Africa’s Biggest – selling Artist.

Lucky Dube was born in Ermelo, Formerly of the Eastern Transval, now of current Mpumalanga,

on 3rd August 1964, Dube parents seperate before his birth and was raise by his mother that names him Lucky,

because she considers his both fortunate after a number of fail pregnancies.

Beginning of His Musical Career. 

As a child Lucky Dube work as a gardener, but as he matured, he realize

that he wasn’t earning enough to feed his family, he begin to attend school.

There in school, he join a group of choir with some friends, Lucky Dube form his

first musical essemble, call “the sky way band”, and discovers the “Rastafarian” movement while at school.

At his age of 18, he join his cousin brothers band, and was playing Zulu pop Music, knows as “Mbaqanga”,

while funding his lifestyle by working for hole and cooke as a security guard, at the car auction in Midrands.

Although Lucky was still at school, while

he is playing his band in Johannesburg, during his school holidays.

How Lucky Moves Into Reggae. 

Lucky Dube moves into Reggae, on the release of his fifth album,

his sound engineer Dave Segal, encourage him to drop the “Super soul”,

All Subsequent albums were record by lucky cube, at this time Lucky begins to

note fans were responding positively to some Reggae songs he play during hislive concert.

Lucky Dube send socio – political messages associated with Jamaican

Reggae, which is relevant to a South African audience in an institutional racist society.

Dube decides to try new musical genre and in 1984, release the mini album of “Rastas Never Die”.

Though the record was sold poorly – around 4000 units. In comparison to the

30000 units his “Mbaqanga”  record would sell.

 His Legacy

On the 21st October 2008, Rykodisc release a compilation album entitles “Retrospective”,

which features many of Dubes influential songs as well as previously un release tracks, in the United State.

In 2005, Lucky Dube was a touring act in the Alice springs, in central Australia, promotes by an entrepreneur,

Scott Boocock, on an advice from his friend, Joe Miller, a Disc Jockey on

Local First Nations Radio Station, “CAAMA Radio”.

On 18th October 2017,Gello Records South Africa, release 25 tracks

limited edition commemorative album, title “The time we’ve share”.

The album features his biggest hit exclusive performances, and 3 previous un release tracks.

In Australia, Lucky’s music found resonance in remote Australian Aboriginal communities, and popularity

has led Dube to be called “Bigger than the Beatle” through out much of Central & Northern Australia.

Lucky Dube’s Death. 

On 18th of October 2007,Lucky Dube was killed by Arm Robbers at a Johannesburg Suburb called Rossettenvile.

After dropping two of his seven children off at their uncle house,

According to Police, report suggest that Lucky Dube

was shot dead by Carjackers who did not recognize him and believe that he was Nigerian.
